 Rats are some of the most troublesome and damaging rodents in the United States. They eat and contaminate food, damage structures and property, and transmit parasites and diseases to other animals and humans. Rats carry many diseases including Hantavirus, Leptospirosis, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis (LCMV), Tularemia, and Salmonella. Rats live and thrive in a wide variety of climates and conditions and are often found in and around homes and other buildings.  Rats are larger, stronger relatives of mice. they are intelligent adaptable animals that will eat almost anything, including leather, plastic.

Raccoons can easily access roofs by climbing trees, downspouts, vines, or a trellis located near the house. Therefore, to prevent raccoons from entering houses, roofs and chimneys, these should be well-maintained. 

Seal any entry points near the eaves of the roof and securely place a chimney cap over the chimney, excluding them from re-entry by rodent proofing your home.

Raccoons that have already gained access into attics, flues, or storage buildings are often females seeking safe den sites to whelp and raise their young during their lengthy breeding season that runs from late March-May (whelping) into June-July (weaning and pup rearing). Some denning females with young may be able to be tolerated until the young are old enough to leave the den at around 8 weeks of age.

Although Opossums are cute and great for our enviroment, they also can become dangerous with their ability to transmit diseases to pets and people.  Opposums are known to carry leptospirosis, tuberculosis, coccidiosis, spotted fever, tularemia, and other diseases. However Opossums do not carry rabies. 

 But far from being a nuisance, opossums can be beneficial for your garden, eating snails, slugs, insects and sometimes even small rodents. They'll even clean up spilled garbage and fruit that has fallen off trees, keeping neighborhoods clear of unwanted pests like cockroaches, rats, and mice.
